Start with the calendar. Birmingham's farmers' markets run on a rota, so there is one most Saturdays. Kings Heath and Bournville both ran on Saturday 7 November. Kings Norton and the Edgbaston artisan market follow on Saturday 14 November, and Moseley closes the month on Saturday 28 November. Birmingham Live rounded up the details, and this is the short version.

Saturday 14 November: Kings Norton and Edgbaston

Kings Norton Farmers' Market is held every second Saturday, 9am to 1.30pm, on the cobbled Kings Norton Green, B38. It began in 2005, set up by local residents, and it is not-for-profit, with any surplus going back into the community. Expect specialty coffee beans, locally baked sourdough, root vegetables, plant-based desserts, Punjabi food, candles and local honey. Dogs are welcome. Parking nearby is limited, but the landlord of the Bulls Head lets market visitors use the pub car park for free during market hours. By train, Kings Norton station is a short walk away.

The Edgbaston artisan market is not technically a farmers' market, but it is the biggest artisan market in the city, with up to 80 stalls. It runs every second Saturday, 10am to 6pm, on Greenfield Crescent, B15. Look for fresh produce, treats, jewellery, home décor and gifts, with local musicians playing and dogs welcome. Street parking is free for two hours, with pay-and-display nearby. Five Ways station is a 5 to 10 minute walk.

Saturday 28 November: Moseley

Moseley Farmers' Market is the heavyweight. It has won the Best UK Farmers' Market award four times since launching in August 2000, and has grown from 12 stalls to around 60. Volunteers run it, and everything sold must be reared, grown or made within 50 miles. It runs on the last Saturday of the month, 9am to 2pm, at the crossroads in Moseley village on Alcester Road, around St Mary's Row and the Village Green, B13.

  • Buy: seasonal fruit and veg, artisan bread, cakes, cheese, meat, preserves and street food.
  • Good to know: dogs on leads are fine, and access is step-free.
  • Getting there: a large public car park sits just off the main junction. Moseley Village station on the Camp Hill line is a short walk, with direct trains from New Street.

The first Saturdays: Kings Heath and Bournville

Kings Heath Farmers' Market runs on the first Saturday of the month, 9am to 2pm, on Kings Heath Village Square by the church spire, where High Street meets Vicarage Road, B14. Founded in 2006 and run by a market committee, it has around 20 growers and makers. Expect allotment vegetables, fresh fish, local cheeses, pastries and hot street food. It is dog friendly and fully accessible. There is a car park on the High Street, and Kings Heath station on Alcester Road is a short walk. The next one after the 7 November market will be the first Saturday of December.

Bournville Village Farmers Market is the newcomer. More than 2,200 people came to the first one in October, many traders sold out, and there were morris dancers and a live brass band. It ran on Saturday 7 November, 10am to 2pm, with another planned for Saturday 5 December, on Sycamore Road in the centre of the village. Stalls cover fruit and veg, artisan food, bakes, crafts, plants and flowers. No dogs, apart from assistance dogs. Free parking is at the shoppers' car park on Sycamore Road, next to Kafenion, though visitors are encouraged to take the train to Bournville station, a short walk away.

How to plan it

  • First Saturday: Kings Heath, with Bournville on the dates announced.
  • Second Saturday: Kings Norton in the morning, Edgbaston all day.
  • Last Saturday: Moseley.

Moseley and Kings Heath both sit on the Camp Hill line from New Street, so a new arrival without a car can reach either easily. Bournville and Kings Norton are on the Cross-City line. Take a bag, take cash if a stall is small, and get there early if you want the sourdough.
